The Tall Girl Skinny - From Marshall Chapman

October, 2012

Well, well, well …

It looks like I’ve been nominated for a musical honor in my hometown of Spartanburg, SC. Personally, I think the oldest nominees should go in first. But since I’m old enough to die without anyone saying, “Oh, how tragic, she was so YOUNG,” then perhaps I qualify. Click here to vote.

Okay. Highlights since the last Skinny include the Southern Women’s Writers Conference in Mount Berry GA, Alyne Massey post-memorial send-off at BMCC, Clifford Curry tribute in Nashville, Moonlight on the Mountain (with Hannah Thomas) in Birmingham, Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Allen Reynolds tribute at Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, Vanderbilt’s SEC road win against Missouri (Go ‘Dores!), Writers Conference in Auburn AL, Constance Gee book release party (click here to order book), and my annual Literary In-the-Round at the Bluebird Cafe.

A new documentary called AKA Doc Pomus is currently making the rounds at film festivals. (Click here for review by Greil Marcus.) Doc was a great songwriter and my great friend. This film movingly captures the magic (and tragic) that was his life. I was honored to have been asked to participate in the making of this film. Nashville Jewish Film Festival screening is November 15 at the Belcourt.

As for upcoming gigs, I’ll be at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA (Nov. 1), Kirk Avenue Music Hall in Roanoke (Nov. 2), and the Down Home in Johnson City (Nov. 3). Click here for details.

Other than that, I’m finishing up a new CD that I’m real excited about. Look for spring 2013 release.

Wishing you love and happiness,
Marshall Chapman (signature)

Wild Kingdom

Beyond Words - Marshall ChapmanOne night last week my husband and I were taking our usual walk around the neighborhood when we saw something that stopped us dead in our tracks. Sitting under a streetlight at the end of the street was a dog. Or was it? We weren’t quite sure. Some dogs that live nearby often bark like crazy from behind a fence whenever anyone walks by. But tonight, they were strangely silent.

This “dog” wasn’t behind a fence. And he wasn’t barking. He was staring. (I say “he” only because he exuded a certain contained alpha-male energy that had the hairs on my neck standing up.)

Cindy Hewitt and I were pals from Vanderbilt. As I recall, Tony Joe White (in black golf clothes) had just strolled by when this photo was taken. Now, all I want to know is WHAT am I doing in a photo with Danny Davis at a friggin’ golf tournament? Drinking Schlitz in a can? Smoking a cigarette?

God bless the early ’70s … when the ’60s hit the South!
